Frequently Asked Questions About Aqua-Tots
Swim Lessons & Class Structure
What age can my child start swimming lessons?
We begin teaching children to swim as young as four months old, but if your child is older than that, go ahead and start now—there’s always time to learn! The proven Aqua-Tots curriculum is designed to teach children of all ages and abilities how to become safe and confident swimmers for life.
What time of year can I enroll my child in swim lessons?
Aqua-Tots offers year-round swim lessons for children, and enrollment is always open!
How long are swim lessons?
Swim lessons at Aqua-Tots last 30 minutes. We’ve found this to be the ideal length of time that young children can focus while still having fun.
What training do your instructors receive?
Aqua-Tots swim instructors have completed 40+ hours of intensive in-classroom and in-water training as well as written and in-water exams. Additional training or qualifications vary by location. Instructors continue to be evaluated regularly and participate in monthly training sessions to ensure that your child is in the absolute safest environment.
Will my child have the same instructor for every lesson?
Our goal is to offer consistent instructors for scheduled swim classes, however, sometimes a change occurs due to instructor availability, sickness, vacation, etc. Rest assured that all instructors are equally equipped to teach your child how to swim safely, and your Aqua-Card allows all of our instructors to stay up-to-date on what your little one is learning.
How many students are in a swim class at Aqua-Tots?
Our small group swim lessons at Aqua-Tots have a 4:1 student to instructor ratio. This ensures a safe and social environment for your child to learn to swim.
How many days per week should my child take lessons to develop strong
We recommend 30-minute swim lessons, 2-3 days per week. This results in the best retention of skills because our curriculum links one skill to the next and builds upon your child’s success periods.
Is my child expected to go underwater?
The simple answer is, YES! Safe swimming begins with learning breath control right from the start, and children learn to hold their breath through experience. Going underwater is something most children enjoy after just a few lessons. So, keep cheering them on, even if they’re nervous.
How quickly will my child learn to swim?
Our instructors are committed to helping each child progress as quickly as possible while maintaining the standards of our proven curriculum. Each child’s progress is unique and impacted by age, frequency of lessons, level of comprehension, development of motor and cognitive skills, and their ability to process multiple tasks. Your child’s coach will communicate with you following each lesson so you know what they are working on, and you can easily track their progress from the Aqua-Tots app!
What happens if my child is less or more advanced than the other children in their class?
We know that all children are unique and learn at their own pace. Our swim instructors are equipped to teach each child based on their current progression and help them advance through the Aqua-Tots swim program. You are also able to track your child’s progress right from your phone on the Aqua-Tots app.
What does my child need to bring to their swim lesson?
You can view lesson expectations and what to bring for your child’s specific level by visiting our swim levels page.
Can I bring my kids if they’re sick?
Your kiddos will learn best when their bodies are well. Please use the app to reschedule lessons if your little ones have any of the following symptoms within 24 hours of their scheduled lessons:
- ● Fever of 100.4 or higher
- ● Green mucus
- ● Severe cough
- ● Sore throat
- ● Skin rash
- ● Vomiting
- ● Diarrhea
How warm is the Aqua-Tots swimming pool?
We keep our swimming pool at a warm 90° so little ones stay cozy and comfortable while learning to swim.
How can my child rinse off after swimming?
Our Aqua-Tots pool room is equipped with multiple showering stations so tots can quickly rinse off after lessons. This helps get the chlorine off their skin until they can get home for a proper scrub-a-dub-dub.
Can I take photos of my child during their swim lesson?
Of course! Your kiddos are growing by leaps and bounds, and we want you to capture these sweet swimming memories. All we ask is that you take photos from the safety and comfort of our parent viewing area.
If my child takes a break over the winter, will they forget everything?
We understand that families occasionally need to take a break from lessons for a variety of reasons, and when that happens, some regression is to be expected. Participating in year-round swimming lessons is the most effective way for your child to become a safe and confident swimmer and helps them retain more knowledge for longer periods of time. Swimming occasionally throughout the year can create a gap in swimming skills, and your child may have to relearn those skills upon returning to swim lessons instead of immediately jumping into new skills.
