Every parent can agree that they desire to raise grateful tots. But in this day and age, children are inundated with the next gizmo or gadget, and during the holiday season particularly, Mom and Dad may hear a lot of “I want” statements. However, a recent study published in the Journal of Positive Psychology found that some parenting tactics nurture the ways of gratefulness while lessening the materialistic mindset.
“Our findings show that it is possible to reduce materialism among young consumers, as well as one of its most common negative consequences (non-generosity) using a simple strategy — fostering gratitude for the things and people in their lives,” wrote researcher Lan Nguyen Chaplin.
